Polignano a Mare is one of the most picturesque towns of Puglia, located 40 km south of Bari, offering all the right ingredients for a perfect day out.
The tiny old town, reached through the Porta Vecchia gate or Marchesale Arc, combines charming, white-washed streets with beautiful old churches such as the Chiesa Matrice, the most important historical momument of Polignano.
You may find yourself getting lost in the winding streets, but you won’t mind at all. Before you know it, you will have reached one of three panoramic terraces offering breathtaking views of the beautiful Adriatic Sea and coastline.
Visit Trajan Bridge, just north of the historic centre, built under the Bourbon domination, still viable, that crosses Lama Monachile, a deep inlet just north of the old town which was an ancient trading port during the rule Veneta in the fifteenth century and today is hub of tourist life of Polignano, especially on summer evenings.
Pop down to the Blue Flag beach, just a few minutes walk from the old centre, which has crystal clear waters and is flanked on two sides by cliffs from which children and teenagers dive all through the day until sunset.
